Belladonna Bouquet : the scarlet Ceremonies (US,1999)**° Tr.2, "Nuit and geb" 4 min When I listened to this in headphones I heard too many cdr-recording mistakes so That I preferred not to airplay too much of it. This is Sarada (guest and loose member Stone Breath) and Jenne. Review at http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/WICCAREVIEW2.html * private Kwannon : Clear Star (rec.2002,pub.2003)*** Tr.1, "I have a young sister" (lyrics : an.,12th century) 7 min Tr.4, "Old Woman" 5 min Tr.6, "Steel Grey Sea" 5 min (shortened) 17 -21 Very nice solo project of Jenne. Shamanistic, female acid folk, with medieval and troubadour touch. Just imagine something like a complete pagan version of Dead Can Dance, but more repetitive / circle dance ritualistic. Review at http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/WICCAREVIEW2.html * private Green Mistletoe : Ligna Silvarum (US,200?)** Tr.4, "Underneath the broomtree" 4 min 25 Similar in style like Stone Breath, slightly more neo-folk, but more minimal in inspiration. Very much inspired by early European Christianity when the religion adapted many pagan elements, like into the greening Christ. Review at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview4.html * Sept.Gurls Rec. The Spectral Light & Moonshine Firefly Snakeoil Jamboree: Burning Mills (US,2004)**°' Tr.7, "O the dreadful wind and rain" 11 min (shortened to 8 min, with outro instrumental) 33 Off-shoot of Stone Breath. With lots of duo vocals, banjo,.. Nice. Seemingly Influenced by English tradition, neo-pagan folk scene, perhaps even Appalachian music etc. Review at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview4.html -PSYCH-FOLK/ACID FOLK,..: * Camera Obscura Rec. Verdure : the telescope dreampatterns (US,rec.2002, pub 2004)***° Tr.3, "The Greentree" 4 min Tr.4, "Moonlanding" 3 min 7 -40 This beautiful deadly melancholy has something of the earliest 2 records of Green On Red, especially in first track and these two beautiful tracks. Review at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/psychfolkpopreview2.html * Fonal Rec. Islaja : Mesitil(FIN,2004)**° Tr.6, "Haikea, Kirkas" 3 min Tr.1, "Kristallipallosilmät" 4 min 7 -47 Most of the album is very stoned almost colour-book like shamanistic female semi-psychedelic acoustic folk. This first and a few other tracks are more like repetitive minimal music. Full review at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview5.html * Soft Abuse The Skygreen Leopards: one thousand Bird Ceremony (US,2003)*°° Tr.1, "Summer Alchemy" 040->end 3 min 3 -50 Cooperation of Verdure's Donovan Quin psych-folk style with Glenn Donaldson of Jewelled Antler's style of dreamy vagueness & stoned-mind-ness. Review at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview2.html * Noth East Indie Climax Golden Twins : highly bred and sweetly tempered (US,2004)**°° Tr.3, "Every word in the bible" 2 min Tr.4, "Billy McGee McGaw" 4 min Tr.6, "Solid Gold Microphone" 2 min Tr.10,"I'm comin'Lord, I'm a comin'" 7 min 15 -65 Nice semi-acoustic item with (acoustic and American styled slide-guitars, piano,.. and) various old and newer field recordings elements interwoven. I have to airplay enough of it to give an idea of it. Nice release. Like a musical soundtrack. Review at http://singersong.homestead.com/newwriters-2.html * Soft Abuse Langtry : As Upon the road thereto (US,2004)***° Tr.1, "Billy Bowlegs Blues" 4 min Tr.4, "Binderstiffs" 3 min Tr.10, "the erotic melancholy of cypress" 3 min 10 -75 Iron & Wine guitarist Patrick McKinney. I heard one Iron & Wine release lately. I still prefer highly this album above it. A good guitar-only album, slightly American styled and influenced by serious blues. Info : captainimmaculate@hotmail.com Review at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/guitar3.html * private Tim Dawson & Phil Harrison : instrumentals (4-track demo) (US,2004)**' Tr.4, "Saturday Matinee at the elite" 3 min 3 -78 Well mixed banjo/guitar duo track. Rest is more folkrock, not fitting so well in this particular show. Full review at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/folkrock.html -ETHNO FLAMENCO: * Music & Words Labryénco : Calle Ventana (NL,2003)** Tr.2, "Mi companera" (bulerias lenta) 6 min 6 -84 Podium Flamenco styled group from Holland, with well mixed and good sound. This is a relaxed bulerias, with guitar, violin, percussion. Info : www.labryenco.nl * Ethnoworld Scambio : Kunstertu (I,2004)** (Favourite but at the end not chosen track : Tr.5, "Terziere Castello" 5 min) Sort of podium ethno-folkrock group. Short review at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/ITALY.html -PSYCHFOLKPOP,SINGER-SONGWRITERS,..: * Kimchee Rec. Tiger Saw : Gimme danger gimme sweetness (US?,2004)*° Tr.8, "All my friends are right here with me" 3 min Tr.9, "The Sweedest goodnight" 4 min 7 -91 Nice dual vocals, slightly warm sounds, simple, overmodest music in various ways, staying still a bit on the surface of what it reflects, still they express and perform this in a nice way. From the same label Sapersteen is given much airplay in the singer-songwriter radioshow on the same radiostation. Full review at http://singersong.homestead.com/newwriters-2.html * Bluesanct Vollmar : 13 or so people who need chances (US,2004)***° Tr.1, "Who have you never spoken with (spilled upon the ground)" 3 min Tr.2, "Dove for sale" 2 min Tr.3, "A widow" 3 min 8 -100 Very much in footsteps of Palace / Bonnie Prince Billie. Beautiful songs. These (with Múm's singer) are my favourites. Review at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/poorminstrels.html * Mobilé Slowblow (ICE,2004)**° Tr.2, "I know you can smile" 4 min Tr.4, "Second hand smoke" 4 min Tr.7, "Cardboard Box" 4 min 12 -112 I especially like the duo vocals with arrangements. -(order of appearance of this item in show can still change)- Review at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/psychfolkpopreview2.html * Glitterhouse Rec. Edison Woods : Seven principles of leave no trace (US,2003)****? Tr.1, "Secrets" 6 min Tr.5, "Was he a poet" 8 min 14 -126 Very nice voice with Rhodes, cello, guitar, background sounds, with beautiful production sound. Second track is with mellotron, violin, cello, drums, bass. PS. A plume is hidden in the jewel box, fitting perfectly with the booklet colours. Review at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/psychfolkpopreview2.html * private Jana Hunter : JH (demo) (US,2004)**° Tr.3, "Have you got my money?" 4 min -130 Very good, powerful track with driving bass sound of guitar, with additional violin. I might airplay something else in a future show. Full review at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/poor.html * Private Kathleen Yearwood : Little Misery Birds (CAN,200?)***°° Tr.1, "Sweetgrass" 4 min Tr.5, "In the garden of love" 2 min Tr.7, "The Sunflower" 3 min Tr.12,"Tinderbox" 4 min 13 -143 Very good singer-songwriter release, with emotional strength in expressions. I will airplay more of her in a later show. Privately released. Full review at http://singersong.homestead.com/newwriters-2.html * Inside Out Paatos : Kallocain (S,2004)**** Tr.8, "Won't be coming back" 6 min -150 Very good modern song orientated progressive pop item. Less progressive as the earlier album, but it is just perfect as it is. Recommended. Review at http://progressive.homestead.com/sweden.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ NEW REISSUES AND RELEASES, part 2 : 2004-09-29 AMBIENT -> AMBIENT ORCHESTRA * Silber Rec Mike Van Portfleet : Beyond the horizon line (US,2004)** Tr.1, 8 min I don't play often ambient music, but I wanted to make an exception, because it fits to what I bring in this show. Like often with ambient on track one we hear distant noises and loops in the back, forming together one echo-drone sound with the feeling of a big bubble space environment where the individual sounds echo around. Soundfiles of two tracks : http://www.musicnonstop.co.uk/store/mp3s/mikevan_echoeslostsea.mp3 or http://www.silbermedia.com/mp3s/Mike_VanPortfleet_Echoes_Of_The_Lost_Sea.m3u Info : http://www.silbermedia.com/mikevanportfleet/ * If The Else Rec. Slow Six (US,2004)***° Tr.1, "This is your last chance" 222->12 min Tr.2, "Evening without atonement" 606->16 20 -28 This is a kind of "Ambient chamber music". Really nice to listen to. Fender Rhodes, electric guitar and background sounds and keyboards (?) mixed in computer. Second track is with background loops, Rhodes, violin, with violin leading with a melodic improvisation. Review & info at http://progressive.homestead.com/prog8.html FREE STYLED ACID/PSYCH FOLK * Last Visible Dog Black Forest/Black Sea : Radiant Symmetry (US,2004)**° Tr.2, recorded in Tampere, Finland here with Kemialliset Ystävät members 3 min This is a compilation from their European tour with all kinds of guest artists. With very free and also very loose improvisations mostly. It is compiled well, and makes most sense as a whole. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview2.html * Strange Attractors Six Organs of Admittance : The Manifestation (US,1999,2004)***° Tr.1, "The Manifestation" 200-16 14 min -45 Rather free improvisation with psych folk execution, and Ash Ra Temple like keyboard improvisation. A fine work. Review at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview3.html US 70'S SPIRITUAL PSYCH FOLK * Synton Prod. Can Am des Puig / .. : The Book of Am, part one : dawn and morning (F/UK ?,1978)****° Tr.1, "AM" 2 min Tr.2, "The Song of Am" (Juan Leslig) 5 min Tr.10, "As the wind blows" (R.Tagore) 4 min Tr.11, "Hear the voice of the bard" (W.Blake) 4 min Tr.12, "I'm that living soul" (pyramid texts) 5 min 20 -65 One of the better psychfolk releases which still didn't see an official reissue. Lead vocals with accompaniment are very much comparable to the Incredible String Band. The multi-layered harmonious background choirs (by female and male vocals) are more comparable to the mood in some religious/spiritual psychfolk examples (which are as well comparable to ISB) like The Trees. (US), Yellow Autum (US), .. The release only had a very limited reissue on this bootleg label, a couple of years ago. It was sold out quick. The original name of the group if I remember well were the three musicians. These folks were friends of Daevid Allen (who produced the album and co-written songs) & Gilli Smyth(Gong). "Book of AM" surely was NOT the group's name. One day a member of the group mailed me saying they had made a second part too, but it never found its way to a release. But (both albums) will be released soon : http://www.planetgong.co.uk/octave/vinyl/12_bookofam.shtml * Vala Rec. Yellow Autumn : Children of the mist (US,1977)***°° Tr.1, "Mithril Melon" 2 min Tr.4, "Energy" 5 min Tr.5, "Wooden Table Fable" 9 min 16 -81 "Spiritually" inspired psych-folk item. Beautiful. Should interest any ISB fan too. Sadly not reissued yet. A classic/must-have. PS. Band leader Gary Creighton passed away from a heart condition only a few years after making this. * Merry-go-round R. The Search Party : Montgomery Chapel (US,1969)***°° Tr.2, "Renee Child" 3 min Tr.3, "Melayna" 2 min Tr.4, "When he calls" 5 min Tr.5, "So many things have got me down" 10 min Tr.7, "All but this" 5 min Tr.10, "The decidedly short epic of Mr.Alvira" 4 min 29 -110 Religious inspired psych and psych-folk. Seemingly very much influenced by Jefferson Airplane, or has at least some similarities in some songs. This is an official reissue published in Korea recently (2004). Very good !! For me a must- have. Impossible for me to choose less. For me these chosen tracks are all essential listen. Review and info : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreviews2.html * RCA Jefferson Airplane : Surrealistic Pillow (UK,1967)****° Tr.5, "Comin' back to me" 6 min Tr.10, "White Rabbit" 3 min -120 A classic song from a great psych pop album. I once noticed it was used perfectly in a movie too. One of the only songs of Jefferson Airplane sung by Marty Balin. Couldn't help it playing the song inspired by the Alice in Wonderland story. I might like even more the earlier longer version by the earlier group The Great Society. Of course this song is about an LSD trip. * private VA : "A Trip to Harrogate" Harrogate Folk Club (UK,1971)**** Wonderful private recording with a live recording with Steve Morrison, Gallery, Robin Jeffrey, Ray Black and Colin Vale, Geraldine Hall. Will be airplayed in singer-songwriter radioshow. Info : http://www.jeffersonairplane.com/home.html -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SINGERS : small ANTONY special * Secretly Can. Antony and the Johnsons (US,1998)****° Tr.1, "Twilight" 4 min Tr.2, "Cripple and the Starfish" 5 min Tr.3, "Atrocities" 4 min Tr.7, "Deeper than love" 5 min 18 Welcome reissue of unique figure, song-writer and voice. A fave of mine. Review at http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-3.html * Rebis Music Antony and the Johnsons (US,2000)****° Tr.1, "I fell in love with a dead boy" 4 min 22 Tr.3, "Soft Black Stars" 5 min 27 A must-have 3-track single with another 3 beautiful songs and performances. Review at http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-3.html * Durtro Antony and Current Ninety Three (under soft black stars) (live at Saint Olave's Church in London) (US/UK,2002)*****/*** Tr.1, "You stand above me" 3 min -150 Review at http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-3.html -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Other playlists : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/2004.html General index page : www.radiocentraal.be/psychevanhetfolk More detailed index page : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/index.html Receive weekly this playlist before the radioshow with new reviews and additional comments : / ontvang wekelijks playlist vòòr de radio-uitzending : Subscribe / schrijf u in : psychevanhetfolk-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
