Playlist "Psyche Van Het Folk", Radio Centraal, Antwerpen, Belgium 2003, April 2nd : newly achieved releases in folk / acid Folk / Psych Folk style. * Strange attractors Steffen Basho-Junghans : Rivers and Bridges (D,2003)****° Tr.2, "Hear the winds coming" (6 string) 5 min Tr.6, "Epilogue" (6 string) 3 min 8 New release of this acoustic guitar legend. Very beautiful, crafty 6 and 12 string tracks. The 6-string tracks sound as rich as the 12 string tracks. Inspired by the early Takoma releases. Info : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Basho.html CNI Radicante : Lettere Migranti (I,2002)**° Tr.4, "Lettere che t'ammane" 5 min 5 13 Review at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/ITALYCNI.html * E + D Rec. The Iditarod and Sharron Kraus : Yuletide (US,2002)**** Tr.2, "Lyke Wake Dirge" 9 min Tr.5, "Wintermute" 6 min 15 30 Beautiful psych folk(rock), with good produced textures, sounds. One of the better releases so far of The Iditarod. With the talent of Sharron Kraus. A bit in the mood of the better Kissing Spell releases. They played "Winter's Spell" track live in my radio show before. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview.html * English Garden The Rabbit's Hat : BBC related acoustic versions (2002)* Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview.html An item with only a few ok acoustic tracks with a psych folk flair. Most of it is less appealing to me alternative singer/songwriter folk. * Acoustic Rainbow Artist/label CD sampler for ac.radio formats vol 11 Tr.12, Doug Hammer : "Woodlands" 3 min 3 mediocre sampler, but now and then there appears a talented track. On this release it's this contemporary classical guitar track with fitting sparse accompaniment. Contact : dhamer2859@aol.com * Acoustic Rainbow Artist/label CD sampler for ac.radio formats vol 12 Tr.8, The Reunion : "Barcelona" 3 min 3 Best of last 4 samplers. This first instrumental track with flamenco theme sounds promising. There are a few singer/songwriters on this sampler which sound ok too. Info artist : articfish@aol.com Info on sampler : www.acousticrainbow.com * Hallucination CDs Jeremy Dormhouse : the Toad recordings (CAN,1967)**° good Tr.5, "Just to hear the bells" 4 min Tr.8, "Ineed a friend" 3 min Tr.11,"October morning" 3 min 10 45 Somewhat lofi Psych folk, not typical Canadian, but in mood more like certain Kissing Spell reissues from UK underground folk. Has its charms. Quality of CD recording is not so good. Cover at http://singersong.homestead.com/CANADAPROG.html * World in Sound Glenn Faria (US,1964/1969/1971)*° good Tr.2, "Summer's gone" 5 min 5 A bit like Neil Young on this song. Nice. Most songs are ok, but it's not a must have. Singer-songwriter with guitar. This song is wonderful ! * Hitch-Hyke Rec. Kristi Stassinopoulou : the secrets of the rocks (GR,2002)***° very good Tr.2, "Waves" 5 min Tr.3, "Amorgos Passage" 5 min 10 60 Modern open minded in styles -modern World music fusion pop like- singer- songwriter, with beautiful use of semi acoustic electronica. Some songs are more semi acoustic electronic world music, various others a bit more singer-songwriter pop music. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/MedievalDCD.html * Fréa Rec. Värttinä : Iki (FIN,2003)*** Tr.3, "Sepän Poilka" 4 min 4 Less powerful and more modest as the 2002 release, but surely as constructive. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/FINLANDFOLK.html * Oriente Musik Maria Tanase : Magic Bird (the early years)(RUM,1936-1939)***° Tr.4, "Nu Vine mindru, nu Vine" 4 min Tr.9, "Cine iubeste si lasa" 4 min 8 72 Traditional orchestrated Rumanian folk, beautiful voice, interpreter. Especially the tracks where her voice gets the time to express are exceptional. The second track I played is a Transylvanian lovesong. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/folk.html * Private Jolie Holland : Catalpa (US,2002)****° Tr.1, "Alley Flowers" 4 min Tr.5, "December, 1999" 3 min Tr.9, "The littlest birds"(Syd Barrett,..) 4 min Tr.12, "Ghost Waltz" 4 min 15 87 I heard her voice before at an American Myth release (in psychedelic stoned country style). A beautiful voice in gospel/downtrodderblues singer-songwriter style. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/folk.html * Capitol Rec. Karen Dalton : It's so hard to tell who's going to love you the best" (US,1969)***** Tr.1, "Little bit of Rain" 3 min Tr.2, "Sweet Subsitute" 3 min 6 93 A classic gospelbluesfolk singer. Very beautiful smoked Negro like voice. Inspiration for Fred Neil. On his turn Fred Neil was inspiration to Tim Buckley. Recognise the emotional voice jumps. Difficult to put off the CD. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/folk.html * Capitol Rec. Fred Neil : Everybody's Talking theme from "Midnight Cowboy" (US,1967)****° Tr.1, "The Dolphins" 4 min Tr.5, "Faretheewell (Fred's Tune)" 5 min Tr.6, "Everybody's talking" 3 min 12 105 Fred Neil sometimes can be very close to Karen's voice technique. On his turn he inspired Tim Buckley's voice. "Everybody's talking" was used for the movie "Midnight Cowboy". Bob Dylan was asked to write a song before, but he delivered his (beautiful) "Lay Lady Day" a month too late. Thanks to Fred's song he's remembered more easily. * Elektra Rec. Tim Buckley (US,1969)***°° Tr.7, "Song Slowley Song" 5 min 5 110 From first album of Tim Buckley. Tim didn't live long but he wrote music history with his tremendous voice. His son, Jeff, who he never saw, didn't live long either but never achieved a comparable status as his father. Tim was not the first with his kind of voice colour. Another predecessor was David Stoughton : * Elektra Rec. David Stoughton : Transformer (US,1968)*** Tr.1, "The Sun comes up" 4 min Tr.2, "the summer had no breeze" 6 min 10 120 Comparable voice to Tim Buckley. Second track sung by Devi Klate. There are also 2 long much more experimental tracks. The first is less appealing to me. Also the second could have been better arranged. * Private Joanne Rand : Into the river (US,2003) I asked for an item of hers because the descriptions looked interesting, with annotations to "psychedelic folk", associations I could not trace. It didn't appeal to me nor to the s/sw radioshow producer. * Dragonfly Lake Sally French : Destiny (UK,2002)*** Tr.3, "Lilie May" 6 min Tr.9, "The Mist of Avalon" 4 min 10 130 Singer-songwriter. At its best when band plays progressive, with mellotron, etc. Interesting. "Lilie May" is comparable to more powerful voices in '70's pop (Curved Air,..) Review at http://singersong.homestead.com/newwriters.html * Beautiful Jo Rec. Julie Murphy : Black Mountains revisited (UK,1999)***° Tr.5, "As in the market" 7 min 7 Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/folk.html * Park Rec. Steeleye Span : Present (UK,2002)**° Tr.5, "Lyke Wake Dirge" 3 min 3 140 The new band. The sound is a bit more as a studio musicians band. It's still folkrock. Possibly a bit more accessible as before. This song is an interesting Mallicorne reminiscent a capella version of the song. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/folkrock.html Outro : * Oggetti Volanti Non Identificati Various Artists : Syd Barret's Vegetable Man (2003)* Tr.2, Pulp_ito : "Vegetable Man" 5 min Tr.13, Castemore : "Vegetable Man" 3 min 150 I like very much Pulpito's version. A very original approach. Castemore's acoustic version is bit odd. Original too.
