Playlist "Psyche van het folk", Radio Centraal, Antwerpen : New Acid / Psych Folk / releases 2002-12-18. * Bluesanct The Iditarod : The River Nektar (US,1998/2003)*° Tr.3, "Helms A'Lee"1 min Tr.18, "One Minute" 1 min Tr.20, "The Fat Lady of Limbourg" 5 min 7 A reissue of the 1998 album, with 9 additional bonus tracks of equal quality. Minimal Lo fi like psych folk songs. The group had played live before, at my radioshow "Psyche van het Folk", earlier this year. There they had also played there this "Fat Lady.." song. This "River Nektar" version is another wonderful version of this Brian Eno song. Review of their latest new item at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview.html * Private American Myth : When Dead Voices Gather (US,2002)** Tr.2, "The Death of Misfortune / Alley Flowers (Julie Holland) 11 min Tr.1, "Pretty Polly" 4 min 21 Downtrodder psych folk flavoured very stoned acid country blues with some female but mostly male vocals. I believe Julie Holland is a very good contribution for the band. Looking forward for a release with more of her contribution. Review at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview.html * Sept.Gurls R. Fit & Limo : Ginnistan (D,2002)**** Tr.4, "Green as beginning" 4 min Tr.6, "Graser" 5 min Tr.7, "Indica" 4 min Tr.8, "By Water Fair" 4 min 17 May be one of the only real psych folk groups from now, in the footsteps of Incredible String Band. Back in the typical Fit & Limo style. The more free folk jazz experiments (there was such noticeable interest to try this in the former release) are this time separated at the last track. A recommended release. Review at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview.html * Sanct.Rec. John Renbourn : Faro Annie(UK,1971)*** Tr.1," White House Blues" 3 min Tr.2, "Buffalo Skinners" 4 min Tr.7, "Cuckoo" 4 min 11 Nice for the (2) sitar/folk(rock) tracks. I like (6) bluesy tracks less (I don't like the blues much most of the times), except for the first bluesfolky "White House Blues", a wonderful duo vocals/splendid guitar track. Renbourne is one of both important guitarists (with Bert Jansch) of my favourite English folkrock band The Pentangle. He still is one of the greatest guitarists. He also played sitar with Wizz Jones at his 1972 release : * Columbia Rec. Wizz Jones : Right Now (UK,1972)***°° Tr.2, "One Grain of Sand" 4 min 4 One of the less known but classic artists. Amongst the best guitarists / interpreters, succeeding to create very poetic moods. A modest but great man. We're happy to present a concert of Wizz jones in Antwerpen at "De Heksenketel" the 6th of February 2003 : Info : http://www.heksenketel.com/gigs.html * Red Fox Rec. Ton Vlasman : White rooms with desintegrating walls (NL,1970)***° Tr.3, "Walking in a country lane" (few sec. less) 4 min Tr.2, "Fight with a circular course"16 min 20 Psych / Acid folk singer-songwriting reissue. A nice one, with Pink Floyd/raga like folk instrumentals (-track 2 is one of the most beautiful examples around, somewhat reminding the German Dom release too-) and some songs. One very early Velvet Underground cover is included too. The concept reminds me a bit at the Michael Oosten release, only this is better. Review and info at http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview.html Other raga-guitarists at http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/RAGAGUITAR.html * Private Rosetta West ; IO Pan (US,2002)? Tr.11, "Rhianna" 3 min Post rock product, with other interests. Need more time for it, so I'm not sure how it is. The production did put most of the music too much to the fore. This item was send in, and was received gladly for one or two psych folk rock tracks. This is nice guitar playing with Indian touch, with fitting voice. * Beaut.Jo Rec. Julie Murphy : Black Mountains Revisited (UK,1999)**** Tr.2, "The Farmer" (a love song) 5 min Tr.5, "As in the market" 7 min 12 One of the most beautiful new contemporary (s/sw and) folk voices/releases. With Danny Thompson on bass, and many other great artists. Reviews : http://singersong.homestead.com/folk.html (will be published in 2003) * Beaut.Jo Rec. Julie Murphy : Lilac Tree (UK,2002)***° Tr.4, "Leave him" 5 min Tr.9, "Night Visit" 4 min 9 "Leave him" is a very very beautiful farewell song. Both songs are beautifully arranged, and with Julie's beautiful and emotionally rich voice. Reviews (with links) : http://singersong.homestead.com/folk.html * Sad Tiger M. Pat Orchard : Outside (UK,2002)*** Tr.5, "Earthbound" 10 min Most beautiful song on Pat's newest release. A singer-songwriter which is amongst L.Woolfe's favourites. Reviews of L.Woolfe (with links) : http://singersong.homestead.com/BUSKERS.html * Private Tinsmyth : Jigsaw (US,2002)**° Tr.1, "Jigsaw" 4 min Tr.8, "Bonnie Jean Cameron" 6 min 10 Nice private folk rock item. Good (dual) female (/male) arrangements with folk rock group. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/folkrock.html * Sev.Wave Rec. Mary Jane : Tacit (live sessions) (UK,rec.2000)**° Tr.2, "I loved a lass" 4 min 2002 reissue from former live LP. Nice, but still less essential compared to some of the group's other releases. * Sev.Wave Rec. Mary Jane : To the prettiest one (UK,2002)**** Tr.5, "Bruton Town" 4 min Tr.7, "No effort required" 4 min 8 The band and Jo Quin's (high) voice at its best. Folkrock comparable with the Trees. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview.html * Big Balloon M. The Red Masque : Victoria and the Haruspex (US,2002)***** Tr.2, "Birdbrain" 8 min Tr.3, "Afterloss" 9 min Tr.4, "Cenopath" 7 min 23 An unknown classic of progressive / Psychedelic, + some not difficult to appreciate free but harmonic improvisations, still in balance with what can be carried from a heart's expression, and music with an acoustic foundation. Best item from 2002 ! Possibly not influenced by 70's classic avant garde progressive items (Saint Just,..) but with the same quality of music as result. Singing mood also reminds a bit at Siouxie and The Banshees' "Join Hands" period, but somehow more refined, wider ranged in expression and instrumentation. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/expanding.html -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- About the grading with *'s : Grading items is meant as a help to know "urgency" and "importance to buy" when interested in the genre : ***** : not to miss, a classic ; in its originality there is not a better example or it is really different. A must have heard. **** : very good, perfect in fact. Matter of taste whether you like it or not. *** : very good, still. If you like the genre, it's worth to trace as well, but it's not as essential as some items with more *'s. ** : good. If you are really looking for much more items within the genre this is still worth to trace. * : still ok, but surely not a must have. Mentionable for some reasons of deeper interest. It still sounds all right. ° : upgrade for reasons of technical quality mostly, while my personal taste might not grade it with an extra * because it is not that perfect listen enough. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Index page with separate webpages and genres listed : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/index.html Other playlists : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/2002.html
