NEWS FROM THE ACIDFOLK/SONGWRITERS SECTION : intro 2 min -GUITAR SECTION: * Important V.A.: The Garden Of Forking Paths (US/UK/JAP,2008)****’ Tr.4, Jozef Van Wissem : “The Mirror of Eternal Light” 14 min Compilation of individualists with odd picking techniques of minimalist-pattern- seeking ideas. This is the most rewarding and interesting track from lute player Joseph Van Wissem I heard so far. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/guitar11.html#anchor_329 * Thrill Jockey Daniel A.I.U.Higgs : Atomic Yggdrasil Tarot (US,2007)***° Tr.2, “Cocoon on the cross” 12 min (-faded slowly in into the guitar piece-) Interesting guitarpiece/improvisation, with intro from this art book + CD. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/guitar11.html#anchor_335 (soon) * WorldOfSprings The End Springs / Donato Epiro : Dust Wind Tales (US/I,2006)**' Limited tape edition of 2 improvised tracks with use of guitar. http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/guitar11.html#anchor_332 - CHAMBER/FOLKTRONICA SECTION : * Nosordo Ljudbilden & Piloten : One Hundred Fifty-Five (S,2008)***° Tr.4, “A.Klingtmann” 6 min Acoustic pieces built up as harmony seeking compositions with diverse instruments, with ear to sounds. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog13B.html#anchor_198 * Rump Snöleoparden (DK,2008)***° Tr.3, “Xylofon” 6 min Tr.4, “Water Puppet Theatre” 3 min 9 You can hear two compositions of playful fun with instruments making nice solid sound collage compositions. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog13B.html#anchor_209 (soon) - PSYCHFOLK : * Important Tau Emerald : Travellers Two (US,rec.2007,pub.2008)**° Tr.1, “Travellers Two” 4 min Multi-track improvisations of Fursaxa with Sharron Kraus inspired in nature and related daydreams. It is rather intuitive music. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview21.html#anchor_767 - NEOFOLK: * Heidenvolk Darkwood : Notwendfeuer (D,2006)***° Tr.1, “Wintermärchen” 6 min -47 Beautiful neofolk on the theme of courage during changing times. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview14B.html#anchor_363 * Heidenvolk In Ruin : A Ghost to be forgotten (US,rec.2004-2007)**' Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview22.html#anchor_317 - FOLK/FOLKROCK: * Mother Earth Miriam Backhouse : Gypsy Without A Road (UK,1977)***** Tr.1, “Far Away Tom” 3 min -50 Reissue of one of my favourite folk albums. Will list some of her new work soon, and will then airplay something more of this album, which was produced by Saffron Summerfield who now released it (2006) on her label. http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/folkmusic.html#anchor_83 * Big Bertha Thistletown : Rosemarie (UK,2008)****' Tr.1, “Rosemarie” 4 min Tr.2, “Gloworn” 7 min -11 -61 There still is made original folk in the UK, but most of the best bands remain obscure. For me, this is one of the best new acid folk & folkrock bands. A future classic. I couldn’t play less! The 4 band members live on a boat close to a beautiful lake which is surrounded by nothing but nature. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview21.html#anchor_758 - PROGRESSIVE FOLK: * Lang.Of Stone Ex Reverie : The Door Into Summer (US,2008)***°’ Tr.2, “The Crowning” 5 min Tr.8, “Wooden Sword” 4 min 9 -70 In the US many groups and individuals which are or become interesting when produced by Greg Weeks and his Philadelphia crew. This musical project has a few rather “progressive” arrangements. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview21.html#anchor_741 * Lang.Of Stone Ilya E.Monosov : Seven Lucky Plays, or how to fix songs for a broken heart (US,2008)**' Perfectly arranged music but with mediocre lyrics. http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview21.html#anchor_757 - AVANT-FOLKPOP: * Important Kurt Weisman : Spiritual Sci-Fi (US,2008)**° Weird Sci-Fi folk & avant-pop. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/psychfolkpopreview6.html#anchor_235 - WEIRD FOLK: * Voodoo-Eros Quinn Walker : Laughter’s an Asshole / Lion Land (US,2008)***°'+***’ CD1, Tr.5, “Baby Neon” 6 min Tr.12,“(Ode to Firebird Suite)” 2 min Tr.13,“Rita Lolita” 4 min 12 (shortened) “Weird Folk” is a term too easily used, because not much of itreally is “weird”, but Quinn Walker surely is. This is a solo weird-folk project with multi-track and some tralala ideas. This first, amusing track sounds like being recorded with lots of babies and a stomping band. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview23.html#anchor_773 - SPECIAL VOICES: * Durtro/Jnana Baby Dee : The Robin's Tiny Throat (US,re.2007)****° Tr.3, “The Robin’s Tiny Throat” 6 min A classic, must-have heard beautiful & sensitive song on piano. It also contains lyrics of what I consider is a very beautiful poem. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-3.html#anchor_205 * Drag City Baby Dee : Safe Inside The Day (US,2008)**°° Tr.2, “The Earlie King” 5 min Tr.7, “A Christmas Jig for a three-legged cat” 2 min -95 Just like Anthony’s latest release they will try to make Baby Dee more known with this one. With help of people like Matt Sweeney & Bonny “Prince” Billie. More arranged, and brighter in style. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-3.html#anchor_206 * private Oliver Mann : sings (AUS,2005)****° Tr.3, “Herringbone Blues” 5 min Tr.5, “Shoe of Leather” 8 min 13 Very individualistic interpretations of what is singer-songwriting, inspired from classical music backgrounds, and while having a gifted classical voice. The first listed song sounds like an American folk song. The second track is a true story into music, like a collage of events and feelings. New album expected soon. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-23.html#anchor_658 * Home Mr.Diagonal & The Black Light Orchestra (B/UK,2008)*°° Rather pretentious and empty-nonsensical with its lyrics, but musically also interesting and entertaining, this is music hall inspired theatre-chamber-music with some rock & idiopop associations. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog11.html#anchor_183 (soon) - SINGER/SONGWRITERS: * Holocene/Fargo Alela Diane : The Pirate's Gospel (US,rec.2004,pub.2006)****° Tr.3, “Foreign Gospel” 3 min Tr.5, “Can you blame the sky?” 3 min 6 I have been discussing with Bob Theil the difference between Alela Diane’s music and some of the more hyped artists which we think don’t have it. The most important difference is that every detail of this is inspired from inside. Alela is a close friend of Mariee Sioux. Together they were noticed in media with enthusiasm. Just now this album is also released in Europe. During the show I noticed suddenly how much the inspirations of Alela’s “Can You Blame The Sky?” d Baby Dee’s “Robin’s Tuny Throat” are comparable. Alela’s song is more about being an orphan, Baby Dee about the loss of a mother, finding difficult to sing or even hear a bird sing, but finding in it the transcending methaphorical cure for the lost voice. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-22.html#anchor_650 * Mother Earth Saffron Summerfield : The Early Years (UK,1974/1976,re.2000)***° Tr.8, “Six Years or More” 5 min Kept a bit like a secret until now, but Saffron Summerfield’s releases were already some time reissued. To celebrate it’s local distribution, here some tracks. A mix of UK folk and the Joni Mitchell area. This my favourite song. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/reissue5.html#anchor_232 * Mother Earth Saffron Summerfield : Who's Land is it anyway ? (UK,1994)**°’ Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-22.html#anchor_647 * Microbe This Is The Kit : Krulle Bol (UK/F,2008)****° Tr.4, “Birchwood Beaker” 4 min Tr.6, “Two Wooden Spoons” 4 min 8 Another highly talented voice. Released only on LP. The second chosen track also was released as a single. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-23.html#anchor_656 * Fat-Cat Nina Nastasia : What She Doesn't Know –single-(UK,2008)***° Side A, “What She Doesn't Know” 3 min 2 short songs were left from the sessions of her previous album. I especially like this song. http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-11.html#anchor_500 …MORE REISSUES: * Fallout Peter Kelley : Path Of The Wave (US,1969)***’ (Tr.9, “Path Of The Wave” 4 min) -could have been left out- Reissue of a rather original downer s/sw album, (reissued from an LP). Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/reissue6.html#anchor_241 * Sunbeam Meic Stevens : Gwymon (='seaweed') (WA,1972)*°° Reissue of Meic’s second album. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/reissue2.html#anchor_99 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2. PSYCH SECTION : * Fallout Hollins and Starr : Sidewalks Talking (US,1970,re.2008)****? Tr.1, “Talking to myself” 3 min Tr.2, “Krishna Dov” 2 min 5 -136 Nice psyche pop album with rather special & improvised instrumental parts. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/psych2.html#anchor_237 (soon) * Fallout Country Funk : Sidewalks Talking (US,1970,re.2008)**°? More often a Westcoast styled album, now reissued. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/psych2.html#anchor_243 (soon) * Proverus The Pillbugs : Buzz For Aldron (US,2007)**’’ Neo-sixties band. The music works best when listening from start to finish. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/progressive.html#anchor_77 * Magnificent The Magnificent Brotherhood (D,2008)***° Tr.1, “Cracker” 3 min Tr.3, “Lifetime” 3 min Tr.7, “No Mercy on Ravers” 5 min 11 Often very convincing and energetic heavy neo-sixties band! Groovy! Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/sixties3.html#anchor_218 * Gear Fab The Rugbys (US,1965-1969,pub.2008)*°?? Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/sixties3.html#anchor_232 (soon) * PsychicCircle V.A. : Phantom Guitars (UK,rec.1961-1964,pub.2008)***° Tr.1, The Krew Kais : “Jack’s Good” 3 min Tr.4, Bobby Taylor : “Temptation” 3 min 6 When the Shadows were big more guitar/bass/drums driven instrumental bands imerged in the UK. This is a great compilation of that era, a step further from rock’n roll and twist to new adventurous swinging and groovy sounds. Just listen to Bobby Taylor’s beautiful fat bass for instance. Perfectly compiled. The Shadows made with their instrumental pop music a perfect open door to fuse and experiment with western pop elements all over the world after a big world tour. Their style was easy to understand everywhere. After them The Beatles did a similar tour, making more changes, but they had already a musical carpet rolled out for them.. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/sixties3.html#anchor_224 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. NEWS FROM THE ETHNO CROSSOVER SECTION : * Cartel/Pacific Bollywoogie –movie (DVD) + cd- (F,2007)music***°movie***°° Tr.1, intro 3 min Tr.3, goodbye 3 min Tr.7, takadim 2 min Tr.9, instrumental 1 min Tr.17, telephone 2 min 10 Music by Pascal Lengagne for this funny French Bollywood movie. The takadim track on video is a must-see. It is a wise man in the forest who takadim-sings this with followers who have monkey-like behaviours. Just have a look at the youtube introduction of this hilarious fragment of the movie. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/INDIAPSYCH.html#anchor_68 * Massive The Darbuki Kings : Lawrence Of Suburbia (US,2008)***° Tr.1, “Yasser Ubetcha” 8 min Very enjoyable “cross-cultural Arab music” by this American duo. This I think is their best track, performed with 2 extra guests. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/MiddleEast3.html#anchor_151 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- outros (OF CHAMBER-JAZZFOLK) : * Home Massot-Florizoone-Horbaczewski : Cinema Novo (2008)**** Tr.7, “Babelouz” 5 min (shortened to 3 min) Qualitative, moody improvised chamber jazz/folk. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/belgium2.html#anchor_134 * Industr.Bras. Sergio Benchimol : Ciclos Imaginários (BRAZ,2007)****' Tr.4, “Depois da Praia” 5 min Very good chamberfolk item.
