Radioshow “PVHF” on radio Centraal, Antwerp : Live on air : http://streaming.radiocentraal.be/ New post-folk & acidfolk related releases + ethno-fusions; 2008-01-19 : 8-10 PM Gradings in playlist based upon individual track tracing. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- * VHF Aleksander Turnquist : Faint at the Loudest Hour (US,2007)**** Tr.1, “Amongst a swarm of hummingbirds” 14 min (small outro of first seconds from second track) Wonderful acoustic guitar improvisation with some brilliant experimentally processed parts. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.com/guitar11.html#anchor_311 * NewAmericanFolkHero Mike Tamburo : Language Of The Birds and other Fantasies -7cdr- (US,2007)*** CDR : “Language Of The Birds”**’ CDR : "Don't leave your bones in my back yard" **’ A few more cdr’s of this box were reviewed, but no tracks were chosen for airplay. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/guitar11.html#anchor_318 * Holy Mountain Daniel "belteShazzar" Higgs : Metempsychotic Melodies (US,rec.2007)***°° Tr.2, “Love Abides” 15 min -29 A real artist’s vision, semi-improvised with weird voce and modified? banjo. This is a song about unrestricted love, and where to find it. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview16.html#anchor_464 * audioMer Brethren of the Free Spirit : All Things are from Him, through Him and in Him (NL/UK,2007)***° Tr.1, “The Lifting of the veil” 7 min (shorteded) Combination of stretched improvisations (James Blackshaw) on guitar, and macro sound & minimalist explorations (Jozef Van Wissem) on lute. On a new Belgian label. Inspired upon a movement that said man should be able to become like Gods on earth, a free spirit that once grabbed the understanding was no longer able to commit sins because then he was inspired by something else than egocentric enslaving goals. While it was an interesting movement, the ideas in theory can easily be confused with unrestricted desires, so not all associated members were equally enlightened beings. This is the most ‘majestic’ opener. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.com/guitar11.html#anchor_324 * Fat-Cat Vetiver : You May Be Blue / Been so Long (Neighbors remixes) -12”-(US,2008)***' Tr.2, “Been So Long” (Neighbors remix) 6 min -44 Some time ago since we heard from Vetiver. This introducing 12” shows some remixes, and might reveal something of the upcoming album. This is the most moody chill-out track of both. It gives the impression to me of a soundtrack for a journey by train looking at colourful images of an exotic, colourful and warm country, like India Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/psychfolkpopreview6.html#anchor_233 * Record Label Fluorescent Grey : Gaseous Opal Orbs (US,2008)***°° Tr.5, “Palette Swap Dub” (with Laurie A.K.) 8 min Tr.2, “Ayhuascaro Emphyreal” 7 min 15 -60 (small outro of first seconds from the 3rd track) Rather brilliant electronic wizard who also plays with acoustic sounds, the first track with rather experimental acoustic sounds, -a must-have-heard track- ; the second chosen track is with acoustic percussion, brilliantly conceived, as something that can hardly played directly live on this level (except by some experienced Africans perhaps). Recommended ! Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog16.html#anchor_171 * demo Hayvanlar Alemi : Pancarlarin Dansi -single- (2007)**° Tr.1, “Pancarlarin Dansi 1” 3 min -63 New privately released CDR-single of some folk song played rock-wise with electric guitars & drums. I recognise the melody..Someone ?? Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Turkprogreview1.html#anchor_65 * Massive The Darbuki Kings : Doumtekastan (US,2007)***° Tr.1, “Bollywood” 6 min -69 Relatively simple and rather percussiove improvisations on Middle Eastern themes and inspirations mostly. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/MiddleEast3.html#anchor_151 * private Nisos : Tradicni Hubda Stredomori -dvd- (CZ/GR,2007)***' Greek group playing in older traditional ways in Czech Republic. Nice, but still a bit too traditional for the Radioshow. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/MiddleEast3.html#anchor_147 * Carbon 7 Himalaya : Namaste (B,rec.2004-2006)***° Tr.3, “Africa” 10 min -79 A group of artists with different backgrounds play a combnation of Indian, jazz modes & with Celtic harp, making a new, spontauously conceived fusion style. On stage the group shows also video projections and dance. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/INDIANFUSION.html#anchor_111 * Private Aradhna : Amrit Vani (US/IND,2007)**** Tr.6, “Man Mera” 7 min -86 Positive Christian-devotional music, in this track slightly rockier. The group is specialised in Christian devotional music of Indian origin. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/east.html#anchor_90 * Face The Brian Bender & Little Shop of Horas : Eyn Velt (US,2008)***' Mixes of Jewish ideas with jazz & other rhythm styles. For my Radioshow the approach still is too mainstream, not as real fusion. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/WORLD2.html#anchor_74 * Home Tam Nà Vulinn : Vestibule (F,2007)***° Tr.1, “Vestibule” 4 min -90 Improvised/composed folk-mix with Irish influences; on this track as folk played with a certain power. A very nice track. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/france.html#anchor_132 * Cynfeirdd Kinovia : Knjiga Pelinova (SE,2008)***° Tr.2, 4 min -94 Rather sad chamber-folk with gothic piano. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview21.html#anchor_702 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Sunbeam Meic Stevens : An even with Meic Stevens recorded live in London (UK,2007)**°° Tr.7, “Ghosts of Solva” 7 min Tr.14, “Ghost Time” 8 min 15 -105 Reappearance on stage of Meic Stevens with new and old repertoire. A magical moment from this concert. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-22.html#anchor_641 * Fallout Aaron Lightman (US,1969)****' Tr.3, “Little Girl”+ interlude 10 min (shortened) Beautifully orchestrated singer-songwriter concept. Would fit nice to Nigel Mazlyn Jones, and the time period of Tim Buckley even when this is not a real good reference. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/reissue5.html#anchor_216 * Fallout Daughters Of Albion (US,1968,re.2008)***° Tr.2, “Still Care about you” 4 min Nice pop album with interesting arrangement and attractive harmony vocals with a sunshine pop flavour.
