I prefer his more weird stuff whch I heard under the name of Almaden. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview23.html#anchor_838 * private Salvador Cresta : Bedroom Preacher -No Talent Lo Fi Spanglish- (ARG,2008)***°’ Tr.3, “Vama” 4 min Tr.9, “very weird things inside my bones” 3 min 16 Great Lo fi bedroom fun-nonsense acid-folk singer-songwriter music. Check him out ! He’s still unsigned, so it’s time to change that !! The theme of this one is the bedroom preacher, which you can hear in these brilliant, humoristic but serious inspirations. This is a limited edition of 1. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview18.html#anchor_586 * private Salvador Cresta : Upolite Upolinko “teta tatá, tateti” -bedroom recordings- (ARG,2008)***’ Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview18.html#anchor_586 * Flutecart Scott Boswell : Thistle (US,2008)**°° Tr.1, “Mulled Wine” 4 min Tr.8, “Bonnets & brushes” 4 min 8-24 Very nice, mostly instrumental album driven by flute & guitar, made with love and an ear for flutes. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview24.html#anchor_844 * Cedar Mesa Scott August : Lost Canyons (US,2007)***° Tr.1, “Morning Star” 5 min -30 Native American flute player who plays on an ancient flute. This is beautifully played. The arrangements in other tracks are rather light and give it a rather new-age touch. Scott received many big commissions, like for Discovery Channel, music for the Olympics in Atlanta,.. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/AM_INDIAN.html#anchor_34 * Milo Ossian (Ksiega Deszczu) (POL,1975)**°' Most known meditative folk group in Poland, with lots of flute and some percussive passages. Those who like this should check out Kwartet Jorgi as well. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/poland.html#anchor_844 * Milo Ossian featuring Tomasz Stanko (POL,1978)*** Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/poland.html#anchor_850 * Milo Ossian : Ksiega Chmur (POL,1979)***°' Tr.2, “Rozdzial II” 9 min 39 My favourite Ossian album, even when it has weird vocal parts. This second track, is somewhat reminiscent to Atman, -therefore imagine it without the flute to get an idea of Atman’s sound-. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/poland.html#anchor_851 * Milo Osjan : Roots (POL,1982)***°° Tr.1, “Rozdzial I Ksiegi Wiatrow” 19 min 58 Succesful live improvisation. It starts completely meditative but becomes after a while orgasmically energetic. A must-have heard track. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/poland.html#anchor_854 * Wydawnictwo 21 Roksana : Barwy -absolutely live- (UKR/POL,2006)***' Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/MedievalDCD.html#anchor_69 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Fire Museum Arborea (US,rec.2007,pub.2008)**°° Tr.2, “Red Bird” 3 min Tr.10,“Echo of Hooves” 2 min 5-63 New full album. “Red Bird” is a beautiful song with an orchestrated chamber arrangement. Partly their (folky) sound is at times bit Appalachian-bluesier as before. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview16.html#anchor_369 * Sunbeam Bread, Love and Dreams : The Strange Tale of Captain Shannon and the Hunchback from Gigha(1970)**°° Tr.7, “Purple Hazy melancholy” 4 min -67 Even when this album is not as good as their later masterpiece, this song stands out as a real beauty. The booklet contains in-depth explanations of the songs. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/reissue3.html#anchor_157 * Guerssen Pererin : Yng Ngolau Dydd (WA,1985)**°° Tr.12, “Henffich I li” 4 min -71 A bit more folk compared to the previous releases, this was only published on tape before. This is a great orchestrated instrumental. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/reissue.html#anchor_95 * Black Thrustle Telling The Bees (UK,2008)***° Tr.4, “Wood” 6 min Tr.5, “Lyra” 4 min 10 -81 This song and an original folk instrumental of pipes with orchestration from this new band, should give already some idea of the folkier side of this band, a great individual approach and vision. Notice also the beautiful artwork of the digipack. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview24.html#anchor_847 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Bo'Weavil Robbie Basho : Bonn Ist Supreme (US,rec.1980,pub.2008)***°° Tr.8, “Grail and the Lotus” 9 min 90 Late live recording of Robbie Basho, showing his guitar talent well. This is one of his master pieces, if not one of the greatest guitar pieces ever. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/guitar12.html#anchor_352 * 3 Lobed Jack Rose : I Do Play Rock and Roll (US,rec.2004-2006,pub.2008)*°°°? Tr.2, “Cathedral et Chartres” 6 min 96 It is really fine to compare styles of both artists. Jacks’ range of interests includes raga, drone and ragtime, but he does not mix these interests. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/guitar12.html#anchor_355 * Tequilla Sunrise Jack Rose : Dr.Ragtime and his palls + Self-titled -2cd- (US,2008)**°? Jack Rose amuses himself in ragtime blues folk with some guests. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/guitar12.html#anchor_355 * Porter Birigwa (UG/US,1972,re.2007)****° Tr.2, “Uganda” 5 min Tr.3, “Kanemu-Kanabilli” 3 min 8-104 African singer-songwriter/guitarist made only this unique lone album with some jazz friends. It is often listen amongst jazz albums, but it is in fact a brilliant and warm-hearted s/sw & guitar album mostly. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/Africa8.html#anchor_273 * Hand/Eye Crow Tongue : Ghost / Eye / Seeker (US,2008)*** Multi-coloured psychedelic drones by Timothy Renner from Stone Breath. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview25.html#anchor_115 * Hand/Eye Crow Tongue : Prophecies and Secrets (the red hand mark in dub)(US,2008)**’ On this release there are also some effects added for a wider range of sounds. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview25.html#anchor_115 * Hand/Eye Crow Tongue : The Red Hand Mark (US,2008)****’ Tr.1, “The Red Hand Mark” 8 min 112 (shortened) (Tr.6, “The Prophet’s Dream” 6 min) Timothy from Stone Breath evolved to a different musical expression, with for me this as a new highlight. This album sounds like a semi-Northern/West-African post-Appalachian shamanistic music (based upon Apocalyptic visions). Each track continues the musical theme with some sort of variation of its musical tools, just like in some African music, with a story-telling context, and with variations of tensions. Great to listen from start to finish. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview25.html#anchor_115 * Terp Zerfu Demissie : Akotet (ETH,2008)***°° Tr.1, “Alayenem Belu, Alsemanem Belu” 6 min 118 The Harp of David was a musical instrument taken to Ethiopia from Israel, after the Queen Sheeba of Ethiopia, wife of King David, had already eturned to her people. Ethiopea became one of the first Christian countries, even sooner than any country in Europe. On this home recorded album (recorded by the Ex) we hear a unique style of songs played on this Harp Of David, with its unique buzzing sound. (To a degree Crow Tongue’s ‘Red Hand mark’ release can be compared to this one, as a western version of a comparable musical approach). African music since the 50s had different approaches of interest. It started with a zoo-effect, looking at traditional rituals to take this out of its context. Then the interest grew in the so called typical “African” sound (based upon highlife and juju). Then jazz and funk and eventually soul was looked for. But the range of expressions within Africa still is much bigger. The 70s knew many great rock albums for instance. One of the best I have heard so far just came out as a reissue on LP : Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/Africa7.html#anchor_271 * Shadoks Amanaz : Africa (ZAM,1975)****° Tr.4, “Khala My friend” 4 min Tr.7, “Africa” 5 min 9 -127 Very good rock album from African origin, with English lyrics mostly. “Khala…” is a favourite song of mine, which is also emotionally empathizing. It has some nice fuzz guitars. But also “Africa” with local lyrics is equally good. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/Africa4.html#anchor_258 * Rounder No Blues : Farewell Shalabiye (NL/IS,2005)**** Tr.1, “The Clock” (instr.) 5 min Tr.3, “Farewell Shalabiye” 4 min 9-136 Very strong debut of former Deirdre guitarist, with double bass and oud player. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/MiddleEast2.html#anchor_119 * Niel Golden Niel Golden : It's a journey (CAN,2008)****’ Tr.2, “Paint It Black” 4 min -140 (shortened) Tr.4, “Next Stop Timbuktu” 5 min 9 -145 Very good New World Fusion album. Recognise the first tune (Rolling Stones) in avery differentversion, played with tabla and other different instruments. Review : http://www.psychefolk.com/WORLD2.html#anchor_82 * Great Mothers Hands Jules Franks : Can we return to the heart (UK,2008)**°' (shortened) Tr.2, “Brother Sun met Sister Moon” max.->5 149 Track with percussion and steel pan fundament, enriched with other arrangements. Under the name of Julian Franks the world music influences were more clear, but also hear they have its share of influence. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/INDIAWORLD.html#anchor_74 * Ancient Mawwal : Black Flies (US,2008)****' Tr.3, “Jackal’s Wedding” 5 min (trad.Syria) Tr.4, “Yurodivy” 6 min 11-160 (Uzbekistan/Russia) Ambitious new World (rock) music project, a kind of follow up to Peter Gabriel’s “Passion” project, with a renewed vision. Instead of exploitation, new world music tends to say “let’s make our own music together, something new.” This album has still very westernised ideas, but is based upon World folk traditionals, expressed by a powerful world rock sound. Review : http://www.psychefolk.com/WORLD2.html#anchor_83 * Sublime Frequencies V.A. : Shadow Music Of Thailand -LP- (THAI,rec.60s,pub.2008)***°° Tr.1, The Son Of PM: "Luk Tung Klong Yao" 3 min Tr.7, The Son Of PM: "Taloong Jun Loum" 3 min Tr.9, PM 7/Jupiter: "Pone Tala" 3 min Tr.17,Johnny Guitar: "Bangkok By Night" 3 min 172 Great mid 60s instrumentals crossovers compilation. This first track sounds more like Ethiopian jazz than being from Thailand. In many other tracks the Thai melodies are more recognisable. The ninth track is more psychedelic. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/THAILAND.html#anchor_79 * Saregama India V.A. : Bollywood Bizarro (IND,1950s)*°° Tr.20, Kishore Kumar : Pagal Hoon” (1960) 4 min 176 In fact the only real bizarre track (vocals imitate cockcrow or something) on this compilation taken from early Bollywood soundtracks (1949-1960). * Sublime Frequencies V.A. : Bollywood Steel Guitar (IND,1962-1986)****° Tr.3, Van Shipley : “Jan Pahechan Ho” (’66) 3 min Tr.13,Charanjit Singh : “Manja Re” (’73) 3 min (If time left : Tr.16,Van Shipley: “Mahbooba Mehbooba” 4 min) 186 Great first-time compilation of steel string guitar inspirations from Bollywood movies.
