Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/folk.html#anchor_131 * Casual Lonesome Jonesome : The Peeper and Chin Chin (UK,2006)**°’ Tr.6, “Lady with a dog’s head” 2 min Tr.7, “The End Of The World” 2 min Simple somewhat meditative dual guitar pieces with some textures and little arrangements made as if watching from a balcony. Often you hear distant traffic. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview23.html#anchor_822 * Humble Soul John Fairhurst : Joys Of Spring (UK,2008)***° Tr.1, “Obnox Stomp” 5 min -14 Guitar solo inspirations from American blues over English styled guitar to Indian raga. I chose the most powerful blues track. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/guitar12.html#anchor_346 * American Dust Matt Baldwin : Paths Of Ignition (US,2008)**°' (Tr.4, “Eulogy and Dark” 6 min) -not enough time- Rather improvised multi-track guitar piece. A very different approach compared to other more directly recording and composing guitarists. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/guitar12.html#anchor_344 * Fallout Fred Neil : Trav'lin Man : The Early Singles (US,1957-1961,pub.2008)**°°’ Tr.8, “Secret, Secret” 3 min -17 Fred Neil’s earliest singles, varying from a Buddy Holly to Tim Hardin style. On this track you can recognise his later approach of his voice very well. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/reissue6.html#anchor_246 * Rev-Ola Fred Neil : Everybody's Talkin' Theme from 'Midnight Cowboy'(US,1966,re.1993)***°° His classic album. Fred Neil remains one of the greatest voices. Although he’s mentioned often for his blues period, this is the most essential album (also published as ‘Fred Neil’). Fred surely influenced the singing of Tim Buckley, with certain songs like “Dolphins” which places his voice too. Also hardly noticed is his raga piece he did in 1966, an experience he shared with Seventh Sons before. He quickly departed music life after having seen and experienced the destruction of drugs and alcohol of musicians in the city life, and which destroyed the life of people like close friend blues-folk singer Karen Dalton, who died much too soon. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/reissue6.html#anchor_246 * Fallout Rainman (NL,1970,re.2008)***°’ Tr.3, “Don’t” 3 min Tr.5, “Don’t make promises”(Tim Hardin) 3 min 6-23 Q 65 member makes this nice, rather strong singer-songwriter folk-rock album, different from all he did before. If I had more time I would have played track 8, “Get you to come through” as well. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/reissue6.html#anchor_265 * Guerssen Cooley / Munson : In Debt (US,1972,re.2008)***°? Tr.1, “In The Rain” 5 min 28 Beautiful subtle voice and songs from this special, rare album. My first quick impression is that this was much more interesting than Alan’s solo material, but I still need to check the solo works in detail. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/reissue6.html#anchor_257 * Guerssen Alan Munson : Good Morning World (US,1974,re.2008)??? Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/reissue6.html#anchor_264 * Guerssen Alan Munson : First Light (US,1979,re.2008)??? Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/reissue6.html#anchor_264 * Fallout Colleen Lovett : Birds With Broken Wings (US,1974+1966,pub.2008)***°’ Bonus track (1966): Tr.13, “Freckle-faced soldier” 3 min Tr.3, “Sandpiper” 3 min 6 -34 Unique sort of (overly)honest and over-sensitive, almost sexual, but let’s say sensual & romantic hippie story, with some personal exaggerations and nice arrangements that makes it unique. Still it is best to experience from start to finish. I also like very much her early single on the Vietnam issue. On the 1974 album she is sounding like a sensitive woman who hardly knows where feelings ought to be stopped, controlled, trusted or mobilized, possibly had met someone who just took advantage of the sensuality of this, leaving the woman behind without that she’s able to understand what happened, but to sing as a witness the experienced story. She actually had started singing old time country with her sister 20 years earlier. It seems that today she’s having a comeback with her sister, singing similar old time country music. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/reissue6.html#anchor_251 * Fallout Montreal : A Summer's Night (CAN/US,1970,re.2008)****° Tr.1, “What About the Wind?” 3 min Tr.7, “Summertime” 5 min 8 -42 Very sweet folk-psych album with a few jazzier moments, like a great version of “Summertime”, the classic from Gershwin. Recommended album. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/reissue5.html#anchor_285 * G-Folk/Fence Things In Herds : Nothing Is Lost (UK,2007)**°°? Tr.8, “Before you go” 3 min -45 Unique instrumental with a Baroque theme on keyboards, with sweet guitar picking, from an introvert singer-songwriter album with dual vocals. I’m sure the lead vocalist will remind people of Nick Drake. A song album with songs about how after disappointments and parting, with the strength of the idea that all people just do their bests and try to make the best, will still be able to work things out well. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newwriters.html#anchor_108 * Pickled Egg Suzy Mangion : The Other Side of The Mountain (UK,2008)*°°° Tr.3, “Chant” 2 min Tr.5, “Many Happy returns” 5 min 7 -52 A few more classical and with Baroque music associated arrangements on some songs of this album are worth lifting out. Sadly, not all tracks are equally convincing. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview23.html#anchor_798 * Angelika Köhlermann Folklabor : The Slider In Advance (Ö,2008)*** Tr.3, “Synthesizer” 4 min -56 Nice new-folkpop album with some subtle PC-driven electro-pop elements. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/psychfolkpopreview6.html#anchor_246 * Bird Magpahi -EP-(UK,2008)****' Tr.1, “Through the Pine Forest” 3 min Tr.4, “To sing with joy from out a sorrowing heart” 3 min Tr.5, “Horses in the Night” 2 min 8 -64 Very nice, slightly Vashti Bunyan-alike psychfolk miniatures of songs. Dual group with Sam from Sam and the Plants. Highly recommended. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview24.html#anchor_838 * private Paz Lenchantin : Songs for Luci (US,2006)***° Tr.2, “Kentucky Hymn” 3 min -67 Nice by guitar and strings arranged mini-CDR with songs and instrumentals. Dedicated to her brother, also a singer-songwriter. This is my favourite song. Some others are a bit more post-Americana flavoured. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview23.html#anchor_812 * Secret Eye Nalle : Live (UK,rec.2006-2007,pub.2008)***°’ Tr.5, “Voi Nuusuni” 8 min -75 A very special track from this limited CDR compilation of live recordings by this definitely weird & psychedelic folk group. Limited edition of 100!! Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview23.html#anchor_821 * Pickled Egg Nalle : By Chance Upon Walking (UK,rec.2004-2005)***° (Tr.3, “Iron’s Oath” 6 min) Tr.6, “New Roots” 5 min 80 First album by this band, which are related to The One Ensemble and The Family Elan. Best listen is from start to finish. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview23.html#anchor_794 * Secret Eye Spires That In The Sunset Rise : Curse The Traced Bird (US,2008)***°' (Tr.1, “Black Earth” 7 min) Tr.3, “Party Favors” 9 min 9 -90 4th album by this all female chamber-weird folk ensemble. This favourite track has semi-Japanese (as if music with koto) flavours. Lilited edition. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview23.html#anchor_828 * VHF Fern Knight (US,2008)****’ Tr.1, “Bemused” 5 min Tr.5, “Hawk Mountain” 5 min 100 3rd masterly done progressive chamber-acid folk album with the help of Jesse Sparhawk and Greg Weeks. Fern Knight’s earlier albums were a bit more song based. Fern Night is Margie Wienk who participated with cello to many bands. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview23.html#anchor_805 * Twisted Nerve Lights (US,2008)***’ Tr.2, “Break,run,fly..” 8 min -107 (fading out) Also from Greg Weeks’Hexam Head studios but a much darker, slightly progressive, effort than any of the other bands which had a chance to record there. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/prog11c.html#anchor_190 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Psych outro : * Fallout Velvet Night (US,1970)**°’ Tr.1, “Season of the Witch” (Donovan) 7 min -114 Very fine relaxed blues-rock/psych opener with good female vocalist based upon this Donovan track. Most of the album is equally relaxed, but sadly features a different vocalist most of the time, and is also mostly less convincing. PS. : On the album you can also find another Tim Hardin cover). Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/psych2.html#anchor_250 * Fallout Magic Bubble (CAN,1969)**° Tr.6, “Summertime” 7 min ->end of show Rather (prog)blues-rock/psych version of this jazz classic.
